As we wrap up another year in our lives reflection seems to come naturally.We think of the things that occurred, the decisions we made and how it all impactedThe way our year played out. Most would agree that 2017 was filled with all sorts of emotions, unexpected turns and twists and sometimes it felt overwhelmingly exhausting.
As politics weaved its way into common conversations, divisions were made and as a country we seemed to sometimes grow further and further apart with an anxiety of feeling misunderstood, betrayed or under attack. I believe this has affected our art. As tensions rise and we carry more weight from the tensions we absorb daily we are either inspired to use that energy or deflated and weakened by it all.
My year was somewhere in the middle. I always try to seek humor in situations I don’t understand or those that go entirely against my logic. Funneling all that into satire or hours spent laughing at memes online almost became a prescription to cure the side effects of 2017.
As for photography, I did not take nearly as many images as I have years in the past. I even sold off my best camera with the intentions of upgrading soon. If you are reading this I hope you experienced a productive and positive year in 2017 and are ready to progress into 2018 and any obstacles it may present.
The highlights of my year include returning to college through an online program sponsored by my employer. This may have some stake in my reduction of images but in the end game education always opens doors and positives to pursue.
I visited new places with the love of my life this summer. We experienced more of the Caribbean. Jamaica and Cozumel (which is one of my favorite places).
